Animal use in experimentation on the rise again

rat used in laboratoriesThe 2008 figures released by the Home Office on 21 July show again an increase in the number of animal experiments. Despite the so-called commitment to the 3Rs (Replacement, Reduction and Refinement), the number of animals has been steadily increasing during the last eight years. Animals Count is deeply worried about the prevailing assumptions about the effectiveness of animal research that exists among many scientists and parliamentarians.

Going, going, gone: Animals Count supports ban on betting on racing dogs

greyhoundWith less than three weeks to go until the closing date of Defra's consultation on the welfare of racing greyhounds, Animals Count supports the 'Racing Dog Protection Act' (RDPA) initiative which calls on the government to ban betting on racing animals. Betting is the driving force behind the industry, causing serious injuries and suffering of thousands of dogs, who are mostly bred in Ireland and raced to death in the UK.
